East Lothian is crammed with attractive coastal resorts: Musselburgh has a conspicuous fishing heritage, and is also known for Musselburgh Links, which is reportedly the oldest playing golf course in the world; North Berwick also has a reputation as a golfing resort. It is also the place to go if you want to take a trip out to Bass Rock bird sanctuary, a mile out in the Firth of Forth. Further east is the historic town of Dunbar, which has a castle ruin, where Mary Queen of Scots once stayed.
