My husband and I took my mum and aunt to Scotland for the first time. Since we had previously been to Edinburgh we had only positive things to say of our stay there as well as the people.
I called around and finally found a B&B that was offering GBP 30 per person when everyone else was asking GBP 35 for the summer season. I booked this in May 2007 for a stay in July 2007 for two nights for four people in two rooms. The owner said she did not take any credit card details nor a deposit to hold the booking - great I thought!
The accommodation was mediocre (not great) and most of the equipment was out of date in the rooms. The wooden woodrobes were mostly just for show as they could hardly open. 3 of the 4 lamp stands were not working. The toilets made a loud noise once you flushed. Breakfast itself and the breakfast room were the only good things.
As we were paying on check-out I was informed by the land lady's assistant/ partner that we in fact had to pay GBP 35 per person and not GBP 30 per person as I was initially informed. When I expressed this the assistant called the land lady and she came towards us asking us if we are trying to tell her how to run her business?. My goodness what an attitude?!
When I informed her that I was given a price of GBP 30 per month and that I had booked it awhile back - she said 'no, it was only booked recently about a month back' and that she had written GBP 35 in her reservation diary when the booking was made'. I was so embarrassed at the fuss that was being caused in front of my aunty and mum that I did not want this lady to spoil our trip. My husband even confirmed that he had heard our telephone conversation and heard the cost of GBP 30 per person. Due to not having any proof/ confirmation I had no choice but to pay the additional cost per head. Never again will I stay there. And a warning from the wise - get something written down or send a confirmation letter to the hotel/ B&B if they do not take any deposits/ credit card details.
There are many other better B&B's to stay at in Edinburgh and you would not have to worry about being accused of telling the owner how to run her business.
