The collection of watercolours, prints and drawings boasts some 20,000 items, and is particularly rich in Scottish, Italian and Netherlandish drawings.

There is an active programme of exhibitions and works are available for study on request. The Turner watercolours from Henry Vaughan's bequest of 1900 are shown each year in January: a highlight of the exhibition calendar.

The main floor galleries reflect Playfair's original decorative scheme with period furniture to complement paintings and sculpture displayed in the traditional manner.
