To the south of Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile is Grassmarket. The area is overlooked by Edinburgh Castle and has much in the way of restaurants and a lively pub scene, particularly at the weekends.
The history of the area has a somewhat sinister slant. With the execution of one hundred Convanters, whose deaths are commemorated with a cross and the murderers William Burke and William Hare using the area as the scene for many of their crimes in the 1820's.
