To travel by ferry to the Borders region, the closest port is at Rosyth in Central & Fife just 50 miles, a 1 hour drive from Galashiels. Ferries to Zeebrugge, Belgium sail overnight for a relaxing journey.

About 2 hours drive, 90 miles south of Galshiels, South Shields port, near Newcastle, has regular ferries sailing to Holland and Scandinavia.

To drive to Galashiels & Borders from Rosyth:

  • A90 out of the port town
  • M9, M8 & A720 to the A7
  • The A7 passes through Falahill and Stow to Galashiels

To drive to Galashiels & Borders from South Shields:

  • A194 from the port to the A19 & A1
  • Onto A696 signposted Jedburgh to A68 for Otterburn
  • A6091 for Melrose & Galashiels
