Galashiels is another typical border town, where the years of border strife are recalled by ‘Common Ridings’. Important events from the town’s turbulent past are re-enacted each year, in a week-long celebration called the Braw Lads’ Gathering. Like other communities in the area, the economy relies heavily on sheep farming, and the locals are passionate about their rugby union.
