This is the largest town in the Scottish Borders, an area dominated by sheep farming, and the wool trade. Historically this was a turbulent area, due to its proximity to the English border, and the people of Hawick, like other borderers, still observe the tradition of ‘Common Ridings’ when they ride out to assert the town’s boundaries. Discover more of the town’s heritage at Drumlanrig’s Tower Museum. A few miles south of the town is Hermitage Castle which once belonged to Mary Queen of Scots’ lover.
