Peebles dates from the 13th century, and has been involved in brewing and wool production through the years. The town grew up around Niedpath Castle, which has a commanding position, overlooking the River Tweed. William & Robert Chambers, of Chambers dictionary fame, came from the town and their work is commemorated at the Chambers Institute, which also houses Tweeddale Museum & Gallery. The town also has a very chi chi hydro resort, as well as the beautiful walled Kailzie Gardens.
