Glasgow has a tough image and prides itself on being the most Scottish of cities. It earned a reputation for violence and high unemployment but now has a well-deserved name as a city of arts and culture. There is some beautiful farming country in the Southern Uplands along the Clyde valley, past mills and castles and the great Robert Burns was born in Ayrshire. Of the islands, Islay is famous for its strong peaty whisky and is home to such connoisseur’s favourites as Ardbeg, Laphroiag and Lagavulin. Jura with its climbable Paps is also worth visiting.
