Sussex Cliffs - © Christopher Holt

Bohemian Brighton, a first stop for Londoners less than an hour away by train, is a mixture of sophistication, dreadlocks and traditional English seaside. Over the Downs, Lewes is an attractive town and old home of Thomas Paine, author of The Rights of Man. It is the place to be on 5th November when thousands gather for the parade and bonfires. North of Hastings, Battle is the site of the famous 1066 Norman Invasion and nearby Rye and Winchelsea are also pretty. From chalk cliffs to rolling lanes, the country along the South Downs is superb.
