Brighton still has two piers, but only just. The majestic West Pier was reduced to a burnt out shell by an arson attack in 2003, and further damaged by gale force winds; plans to restore it to its former glory have been all but shelved.
Brighton Pier is very much alive and kicking, and offers all the traditional seaside trappings, including: an amusement arcade; a karaoke pub; roller-coasters; dodgems; trampolines; and a host of food outlets. There are numerous bars and clubs and the passagiata can go on almost 24 hours a day with people piling out of the clubs to sit huddled around campfires on the beach until the sun comes up and it starts all over again.
By the West Pier there are often stalls selling fresh juices, ethnic jewellery, books and other trinkets. There is also a children's play area and toddlers' paddling pool. The Marina has a mutiplex cinema, bowling alley, large ASDA supermarket and fast food places as well as a couple of decent restaurants.
