Hove likes to think of itself as the slightly better healed end of town, away from the hoards of backpackers and screaming London crowds that pour off the trains every weekend in summer.

Certainly Hove is more genteel, less in-yer-face than Brighton. Mainly residential streets and shops serving the local community it has a more spacious, less cluttered feel with broad elegant streets and grand villas and mansion blocks as well as some of Brighton's greatest regency buildings such as Palmeira and Brunswick Squares.

There are some great little delis and coffee shops, particularly around Palmeira Square as well as good pubs and a club or two. Hove Lawns on the seafront is a great place to kick back with a frisbee or football or just the papers and makes a break from the pebbles and crowd of the city centre.
