Kemp Town is one of the alternative hearts of the city alongside the North Laine. With Britain's biggest gay population and home to musicians, creatives and many of Brighton's more eccentric residents there is no shortage of life. Even a trip to the local supermarket can seem like a trip to the circus if you're not used to it.
Kemp Towns North Laine is full of shops and cafes, the streets can seem ordinary in comparison to the brightly coloured facades in Sydney or Gardener Street. But Kemp Town is more about its people than its buildings or shops.
Head from the Old Steine up St. James' Street, the main artery of Kemp Town. Upper St James Street has a number of second hand shops and a flea market and further on is Kemp Town Village with some great pubs, delis, cafes and a wonderful bookshop. Kemp Town seafront stretches as far as the marina and is much quieter than central Brighton. Peter Pan's playground is great for kids.
