Running perpendicular to the seafront is North Laine Conservation area, or North Laine for short, but usually people mean the four main shopping streets of Sydney Street, pedestrianised Kensington Gardens, Gardner Street and Bond Street where the North Laine abruptly spills out into flavourless North Street.
Bohemian Brighton at its best, the North Laine is at the heart of the city and where the peacocks come to strut their flamboyant stuff. Expect lots of colour, things worn back to front, inside out, oversized, undersized and mismatched - anything to be different and assert that individuality of which Brighton is so proud.
With juice bars, designer pie shops, vintage clothing outlets, second hand record shops, music and great pubs there is almost no need to go anywhere else. Grab a beer and some food on the balcony of the Fringe Bar in Kensington Gardens and watch the wonderful world go by beneath your feet.
