The Lanes are a labyrinth of passage ways, wynds and twittens that were the original fishing village of Brighthelmstone before throbbing Brighton sprang into being. Extending from the sea front to North Street between Ship Street and the Old Steine they are best known for their jewellery and antique shops.
Crammed with quaint, old shops, restaurants and hostelries the Lanes are best wandered lazily and explored as you find them, which is probably over and over again in a somewhat puzzled fashion. During the summer there are often buskers, portrait painters, masseurs, clairvoyants and the like in East Street.
There are also some excellent restaurants, boutiques, designer clothes shops on the fringes around East Street and Duke Street. When you're tired of staring longingly in windows, grab a beer, sit back in the sun and soak up some summertime jazz.
