Childhood memories are made of this...

Posted by a TotalTraveller from Penge, United Kingdom

I feel compelled to add a short review to sing Rye Bay's praises. Many a childhood year was spent here for me and my family; I yearn to return as so much nostalgia is ignited when I hear the very words 'Winchelsea beach' whispered in the wind as I drift off to sleep each night. Although this is a somewhat poetic account of my holidays here I must stress that my review is in no way sarcastic - I truly believe this stunning part of East Sussex is something of a hidden treasure. Although not completely desolate, the number of touring caravans has definitely seen a decline in recent years. God only knows why. With the beach (although pebbled) within 2 minutes of your pitch the location really could not get much better. A short walk away you can immerse yourself in country life in and around the quaint town that is Rye. I have the most vivid memories of eating fish and chips on the harbour by the river rother and venturing around the cobbled streets in search of independent little boutiques and jewellery shops. There are what can only be described as mind-blowing views from the tops of these hilly cobbled streets. Back to the complex itself then, although arguably geared towards the static caravan market, the clubhouse caters for statics and tourers alike. The weekly line-dancing and karaoke provide many a funny anecdote, which will stay with me for years to come. Outside lies a modest, yet fully-functioning play park and a games room is available for children to indulge in a spot of ping-pong, pool, or simply stuffing their faces with sugary treats from the shop. On a sunny day there is nothing better than waking up and literally rolling out of our caravan into the fresh sea air, (which does wonders for the complexion, incidentally) to enjoy the beautiful simplicity of life. Although the site is situated by a semi-main road, there is ample space to posistion yourself away from it. The site is also bicycle friendly, creating an active holiday if the kids need to burn some excess energy. A lovely lady who resides nearby holds (to my knowledge) a weekly garage sale, and many a dodgy teapot have we ended up giving a good home. The locals really are genuinely lovely and the local produce should also be sampled. I grew up in this magical every summer, and as soon as I went home I dreamed of my return. I truly hope others will benefit from its existance as far as I have....
