This corner of Sussex was the one-time home of two of the country’s best loved literary figures: A.A. Milne and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The author of the Sherlock Homes stories lived in Crowborough, and Hartfield, on the fringes of the Ashdown Forest, is otherwise known as Winnie-the-Pooh Country. In Lewes you will find quaint old buildings lining the 'twittens', or lanes, as well as the remains of a Norman castle.
