The heart of Thomas Hardy Country, this part of Dorset features heavily in the celebrated 19th century author’s works. You can visit his birthplace at Higher Bockhampton and the home in Dorchester, where he lived for many years. T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, also lived nearby and his one time home, Clouds Hill is also open to the public. Other attractions include Maiden Castle earthwork and Maumbury Ring Stone, which both date from the Stone Age and the hillside carving at Cerne Abbas is certainly an eye-opener.
