Dover was one of the mighty Cinque Ports that received privilidges from the Crown in return for providing ships and sailors in the Middle Ages. The towns castle boasts the longest recorded history in the country, and has played an important military role as recently as the Second World War. Though without question, Dover’s most famous sight is that of the legendary white cliffs, which tower 500ft above the English Channel and can be seen from many miles out to sea.
