The Romney Marshes are on spur of land that juts into the channel between SE Kent and East Sussex. It is a unique, low-lying plain that is intersected by a maze of dykes and is susceptible to impenetrable mists and fogs, conditions that made it attractive to smugglers.
New Romney is the most significant town on the marshes and was one of the five original Cinque Ports, located on the River Rother. New Romney Station is the headquarters for the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, which travels the thirteen miles between Dungeness with its lighthouse and fishing shacks and Hythe.
Folkestone is a few miles north east of Hythe and the old town by the harbour is a relatively unspoilt reminder of the days when it was little more than a fishing village.
