Tonbridge, not to be confused with Tunbridge, is an historic castle and market town on the River Medway. The 13th century motte & bailey castle dominates the town and is open to the public with displays on the castles 900-year history.

This particular stretch of the Medway is popular for leisure cruising and you can easily hire rowboats or motor cruisers. To the east is a real delight at Tudeley, where All Saints Church features a beautiful collection of stained glass windows designed by the celebrated French-Russian artist, Marc Chagall.

Tonbridge is dominated by its Norman Castle and is home to the famous Tonbridge School founded in 1553 by Sir Andrew Judd a former Lord Mayor of London. Nearby Penshurst is a quaint and attractive Tudor village and is the proud site of Penshurst Place. This was the birthplace of Elizabethan poet and author Sir Philip Sidney and is still the Sidney family home today.
