The resort of Bognor is the invention of an 18th century business man named Richard Hotham, who seized on the contemporary fad of sea-bathing and developed the quintessential Regency resort. George V gave it the royal seal of approval in the first half of the last century and Billy Butlin brought his unique style holiday camp decades later. Delightfully eccentric is the Birdman Event, where people launch themselves from the pier in an attempt at flight – the record currently stands at 89.2 metres.
