Just ten minutes by hovercraft from the mainland, the Isle of Wight is without doubt the most accessible island in Britain. Standing four miles out to sea in the Solent, it often bore the brunt of foreign invasion and has been an important strategic site for hundreds and hundreds of years. Queens Elizabeth I and Victoria are strongly associated with Carisbrooke Castle and Osbourne House, respectively, and the Isle of Wight’s other main claim to fame is as the venue of Cowes Week, the most important regatta in the British yachting calendar.
