We have camped at Hollands Wood campsite before in the New Forest, and found the site to be very nice with excellent facilities and lovely pitches. It is worth buying a Forest Holidays card for discounts. It is half the price to camp out of season.
Wanting a night away, we arrived after a terrible journey on the M3 which set us back nearly 3 hours. We arrived at about 10pm after the site had closed (7.30pm). Knowing that they had an overnight camping area, we were starving and went for a meal. We came back at 10.45pm with the campervan and followed the signs to the overnight area which we have not used before. We found a space and parked.
We got out of the van a man was immediately there to 'greet' us. Used to friendly campers, we said "hello", but it turned out to be the irate manager of the campsite who demanded to know if we were booked in, complained that we had woken up all his staff by driving round the whole campsite revving our engine and that there were rules when it came to camping! He was bullish and rude.
We were shocked as we had only been driving for around 4-5 minutes to find a spot, and their were clear signs inviting us to pitch in the overnight area. This area was small and not flat so we may have had to go up a couple of slopes but I didnt rev the engine hard at all! We apologised to him and asked if he wanted us to leave. He said "if you are going to make noise like that all night!"
How could we when we were parked up with the engine off?
We left anyway and I said that I was making MORE noise now because of his attitude towards us!
