The historic city of Portsmouth plays host to Europe's premier 10-mile road running event, the BUPA Great South Run, which takes place each year in late October. A celebration of a fast, flat and scenic course, complemented by a superb atmosphere has propelled the BUPA Great South Run to being one of the most popular running events in the UK. It's an event that is just as suited to the international elite, as it is the recreational jogger.
A good vantage point for watching your friends and family will be along the Esplanade towards Clarence Pier but again please stay off the roadway to allow the runners to pass. The course passes Gunwharf Quays so why not wave at your friends and family as they head past and then enjoy yourself in the shops and cafes while they run another eight miles! The course passes close to the start/finish area from five to six miles along Clarence Parade, which is close to the shops & cafes in Southsea. Spectators can catch the action by simply walking north across the Common or up Avenue de Caen onto Clarence Parade.
Getting There
Please allow yourself plenty of time to get to the start on the morning of the run, and do take the time to look at a map and work out your route in advance if you are unfamiliar with the city. Why not consider using public transport particularly the trains to avoid race day traffic? Please note that the start time for the BUPA Great South Run is 10.30 a.m.
Please Note
On the day, look out for recycling bins where you can deposit plastic drinks bottles and cans. You can also take home these items and any paper that you have picked up on the day and include them in your regular kerbside recycling bin.
