East Hampshire, at the heart of Hampshire’s countryside has a string of gorgeous villages that are blossoming with individual charm.

Chawton is notable; as Jane Austen's home town (between 1809-17). The house where she lived with her mother and sister is now a museum and contains many first editions of her works.

  • Alton is a handsome Georgian market town that was home to ‘sweet Fanny Adams’. A sordid explanation that is strangely interesting; the phrase, which is used to describe anything worthless, was coined by sailors in the 19th century and has very macabre origins. Fanny was murdered at the age of eight and her name was used to describe the dubious mutton rations issued by the navy.
