Winchester was the nation’s capital for 500 years, and the legacy of this lofty status is an array of imposing, historic buildings. The town’s other claim to fame is as the home of one of the country’s most famous public schools, Winchester College. Winchester is also the start point of the Pilgrim’s Way, which was established according to legend by King Henry II, who made the journey to Canterbury when he heard of the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket.
