| Britain is an enthusiastic sporting nation and so has a multitude of sporting events to chose from all year round. For sports fans who like to spectate as well as participate Britain holds a treasure trove of sporting events in it’s calender. In Rugby the Six-Nations tournament begins in January each year and involves England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France and Italy. In the world of horse racing the Cheltenham Gold Cup takes place in March, the Grand National at Aintree in Liverpool and the Derby at Epsom both take place in June. The Oxford and Cambridge boat race occurs in the spring along a stretch of the river Thames in London. For football lovers the FA (Football Association) cup final takes place in May. Then it’s the turn of a British classic – Wimbledon, this is at the end of June. Then the British Motor racing Grand Prix at Siverstone circuit in Northamptonshire happens in July along with the British Open Golf championship. There are also the five day cricket test matches occurring throughout the summer. |









| In Scotland the Highland Games is held yearly and St Andrew’s golf course holds regular events that are open to the public. Wales hosts the Celtic Manor Wales open golf tournament, its Millennium Stadium hosts both international events in football and rugby, other events include: Network Q Rally, athletic championships and cricket at Glamorgan County Cricket Club. Aside from the major events Britain has lively polo, swimming, badminton, netball, women’s football, lacrosse, squash, baseball, basketball, gymnastics, martial arts and horse riding (dressage) scenes that all have events taking place throughout the year.
