Porthmadog is known as the gateway to both the LLeyn Peninsula and to Snowdonia National Park and so is blessed with some spectacular scenery. It is also very popular for two big reasons - its proximity to eccentric Portmeirion and the Ffestiniog Railway.
Porthamdog was developed in the 1800s by local MP, William Alexander Maddocks because of its situation on the Glaslyn estuary. During the 19th century it was a key shipping port for the slate trade, though the advent of the railways diminished its importance in that respect.
