Raglan, a small village to the west of Monmouth, is most famous for its wonderfully intact medieval castle. There isn't much else to see in the village itself, but the castle is most definitely worth the detour if you're on the castle trail and in the mood for crenellations.

Dating from 1435, Raglan castle is a great mixture of form and function - indelibly strong but with attention to detail. Key points of interest are the Pitched Stone Court with two great chimneys from the kitchens and the lovely expanse of space where the state rooms used to be, known as Fountain Court. The gatehouse at the entrance was the first part of the castle to be built and you can still see gargoyles, heraldic shields and some beautiful stone carving.
