Carew 

Carew, a few miles east of Pembroke, is a tiny picturesque village set by the River Carew most well known for Carew Castle and Tidal Mill.

Carew Castle overlooks the broad, calm waters of the millpond to which it is attached. The site traces its 2000 year history through time as fortified dwellings in the Iron Age , Norman, medieval, Elizabethan and Civil War periods. Nearby is the 19th century Carew French Mill itself, the only tide-powered mill in Wales, which has been a mill site for almost 400 years.

There is a lovely walk of about a mile, which takes in both buildings as well as a medieval bridge and the village's other historic attraction - a particularly good example of a Celtic cross with intricate carving.

• Carew seems to receive more than its fair share of tourists at the height of summer when it can get quite claustrophobic so try and visit off-season if possible or arrive early.
