Portscatho lies in the South-westerly corner of Gerrans Bay on the Roseland peninsula, near St Mawes. The sheltered village meant it was ideal as a base for the pilchard fleets of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and is still an active fishing port today. The same shelter makes for safe swimming and its proximity to many fine sandy beaches means it’s a family favourite.
The village centre offers a small selection of shops including a butchers and a grocery/off licence as well as art galleries and gift shops. The Plume of Feathers pub serves up St Austell Ales and good pub grub.
The surrounding beaches are ideal for watersports including surfing, providing quite a big swell when the wind is south westerly. The cliff path North out of Portscatho, will lead you to the beautiful Porthcurnick Beach, which at low tide, offers acres of flat sand, perfect for games and walking, but you might have to wade a fair way to get a swim.
