St. Austell grew from a small village in the mid eighteenth century when the area was discovered to be rich in china clay. The town prospered and flourished as it played a significant role in the Cornish economy. The history of the area is portrayed at the Wheal Martyn Museum, just outside St Austell.

The novelist Daphne Du Maurier lived in this area for nearly a quarter of a century and it is described in her chilling tale 'Rebecca'.
