St. Austell grew from a small village in the mid eighteenth century when the area was discovered to be rich in china clay. The town prospered and flourished as it played a significant role in the Cornish economy. The history of the area is portrayed at the Wheal Martyn Museum, just outside St Austell.

One of the biggest attractions today is the Eden Project, which has many huge conservatories displaying plant species from all over the world in a “living theatre of plants and people”. The novelist Daphne Du Maurier lived in this area for nearly a quarter of a century and it is described in her chilling tale 'Rebecca'.

  • St Austell's Brewery Tour is a great way to spend the afternoon. You can find out the complete story of brewing from the last 150 years, you can sample the produce and they have a licensed shop where you can stock up on the good stuff!
