The Bristol to Penzance mainline runs along the Cornish peninsula's southern coastline, through the city of Exeter. From Exeter on the south coast, a branchline runs to Barnstaple on the north coast, passing through Eggesford.

First Great Western FGW is the main train operator in the north Devon region, running regular services out of London Paddington.

Wessex Trains offer numerous services between the south-west of England, the Midlands, south Wales, north Devon and the south coast of England; however it does not provide direct routes to London or surrounding towns. Trains run from Barnstaple to either Cornwall in the south-west or to Brighton in the east, passing through Eggesford.
