Chippenham lies at the southern fringes of the Cotswolds and has been settled since Saxon times. Nearby is the immaculately preserved Lacock village, which features buildings from the 13th century, as well as the Fox Talbot Museum, which gives an insight into the work of local man William Fox Talbot, who produced the first ever negative, and in so doing became the founding father of modern photography. Another place well worth visiting is the splendid William & Mary house, Dryham Park.
