Chippenham started life as a Saxon settlement on the River Avon and developed into a flourishing market town. The town’s most impressive feature has to be the viaduct that carries Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Great Western Railway on into the West Country.
The town features many old buildings that give an insight into its past, one of the oldest being the Yelde Hall. Robert Peel who was responsible for the creation of the police force was MP for the town, you can learn more about him and other aspects of local history at the Chippenham Museum & Heritage Centre.
