Marlborough is the main town of this part of rural Wiltshire, and though it gives the appearance of an eighteenth century coaching town, you don’t have to scratch too far below the surface to find Elizabethan, Saxon and Roman remains. Even older is the Avebury Stone Circle, which was erected 1,800 years B.C. and is bound with Stone Henge to form the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearby is the Savernake Forest, a former royal hunting ground.
