Dramatically sited on a wooded hill, a castle has existed here since at least Norman times. The 15th-century gatehouse survives, and Antony Salvin remodelled the present building in 1868-72 for the Luttrell family, who lived here for 600 years.

The fine oak staircase and plasterwork of the 17th-century house he adapted can still be seen. A sheltered terrace to the south is home to palms, subtropical plants, a variety of citrus trees, and the National Collection of Strawberry Trees.

  • There is so much to explore on the garden's slopes. Discover the riverside garden, the Mediterranean styled terrace, and over 1,000 trees. Enjoy walks in the surrounding parkland. The Mill Walk, which follows the bubbling River Avill, brings you to the secluded Lovers Bridge. It was designed with purely two people in mind, as you'll find out if you try its snugly fitting seat.

Further Information

Lemon growing has been a big part of Dunster's gardening tradition for at least 250 years. Dunster's gardeners still grow citrus fruits along the sunny South Terrace, including oranges, lemons and grapefruits. Look out for the ‘lemon’ frame where the 'heir' to the famous Dunster lemon is bearing fruit.

Further Information

The Dunster Castle bat cam films the activities of a colony of around 20 Lesser Horseshoe bats that live in the dark recesses of the stable block, above the National Trust shop.

  • You can watch and hear these special guests in close-up during the summer months on a screen in the shop, as they dangle upside down out of sight above you.
