Minehead is the chief seaside resort on the Somerset coast and boomed in the Victorian times with the coming of the railways. The town has two distinct parts – Quay Town the oldest part of the town, dating from 1616, is livelier than the more sedate Higher Town, which is to be found up the steep narrow street.
Minehead is the start point of the longest coastal walk in Britain, the South West Coast Path, which follows the coast back through Devon and Cornwall, goes around Land’s End and follows the south coast up to Poole in Dorset.
