The ancient market town of Kingsbridge lies between Plymouth and Torbay and is the historic and natural centre of the South Hams. It is an attractive town wit cobbles streets, quaint passage and alley ways.
The modern town is actually made up of two medieval towns, Kingsbridge and Dodbrooke, originally a quarter of a mile apart. One of the most interesting buildings is the Shambles, an old market hall raised on granite pillars and dating back to the Elizabethan times. The tradition of Kingsbridge as a market town, still continues to this day.
There are some fine houses, built in the 18th and 19th centuries, at the top of the town. One of these, Knowle House, was the home of the Captain Montagu of Montagu’s harrier.
The Cookworthy Museum is in the Old Grammar School on Fore Street. There are nine galleries of exhibits in this 17th century school building.
